What to Do in a Dental Emergency
What you do in the first few minutes can protect your tooth and reduce pain. In every case, contact Martindale Smiles as quickly as possible for professional care.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time matters. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk until you reach us. Call us right away, because the sooner the tooth is treated, the better the chance of saving it.
Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Call us so we can find the cause of your pain and treat it.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Save any fragments and rinse your mouth gently. Apply gauze to control any bleeding and a cold compress to reduce swelling. Come in as soon as you can so we can protect the tooth from further damage.
Lost Filling or Crown
Keep the crown or filling if you can and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. A lost filling or crown leaves the tooth exposed and sensitive, so it is best to be seen quickly.
Swelling or Abscess
A pimple-like bump on the gum, a bad taste or facial swelling can point to an infection that may need root canal therapy or other treatment. Rinse with warm salt water and call us right away. If swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911.
